Artist name : OWUSU ANKOMAH - Profession : PAINTER

profile :

Owusu-Ankomah was born in Ghana in 1956. After undertaking his studies at Ghanatta College of Art in Kumasi, Ghana, he moved to Bremen, Germany in 1986. Owusu-Ankomah seamlessly integrates various cultural references in his graphic large-scale paintings.

Adinkra, originally designed by The Akan Tribe of West Africa are symbolic motifs that represent various social and spiritual theories. Ubiquitous in Ghana, these glyphs adorn all manner of objects from functional to artistic. Owusu-Ankomah draws on this lexicon using trompe l'oeil to surrealistically imply veiled human forms in rows of symbology.

These cryptographic canvasses frequently contain characters from various world traditions. Chinese ideograms and Graffiti styles are aligned with Adinkra in grid-like patterns that imply decipherable interpretation. This shrewd arrangement of disparate intercultural symbols infers that Owusu-Ankomah has transcended identity politics. He illustrates the universality implicit in image interpretation and artistic creation.

Owusu-Ankomah has exhibited extensively in Europe, Africa, the Americas and Asia including Dakar Biennial (1996 and 2006), Havana Biennial 1997, Africa Remix, Museum Kunstpalast, Dusseldorf, 2004 and Ghana National Museum, Accra, 2004.

Owusu-Ankomah recently collaborated on a clothing line with the designer Giorgio Armani in connection with (PRODUCT)RED; a world-wide business initiative devoted to the fight against AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis in Africa. His work is included several private and public collections including The Ghana National Museum, Accra, National Museum of African Art and Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC.
